Crazy Iranians

I wonder if the plane that is sending the 15 brits back home will mysteriously crash into some mountains somewhere.

Ahmadinejad would be like "oh whoops, my condolences, bitches."

Mold is scary

I have this indoor plant in my office that I grew from a cutting off another indoor plant in the building.

I've been growing it for about 2 years now and it doesn't seem to be growing very fast.

Well, I decided to give it some fertilizer.  But, since I don't have any 'real' fertilizer at the office, I decided to just put some orange peels in there to decompose and stuff.

Bad idea.  The peels started to mold and the mold spread onto the soil.

I thought to myself, "Maybe I should water the mold down or something."

Well, as soon as the water touched the mold, a noticeable cloud of spores poofed up from the mold.  Nasty.

Maybe I should pour some coffee on the mold and see if it turns into anything cool.

Don't cut in line

I was at a buffet tonight, waiting for the baked fish.  Some kid cuts in front of me to get to her precious fries.

Kids think they can get away with it cause they're kids.

But in the wild, I would have probably killed her and eaten her for dinner.

Kids annoy me.

Riding a bicycle is tough

Since we're being relocated to the Santa Clara campus, I thought maybe I could start biking to work.  After all, getting to the Santa Clara campus means taking Warm Springs blvd all the way until it hits Montague.  Then take a right onto Montague and just before I hit 101, I'm there.

Well, today, I decided to test out the route.  I successfully biked to Montague.  But when I got there, I noticed that I was at the Great Mall.  Hmmm... for some reason, I didn't expect this.

I didn't really want to go any further since Montague didn't seem to have any bike lanes.  So, I headed back.  I stopped by the library on the way back and found that I had a long way to go on Montague before I hit the Santa Clara campus.   Getting to Montague was only 2/3rd of the way there.

I think it would be unwise to bike to work.  Such a shame too.  I thought biking to work would get me into great shape.

Life is full of surprises

Dear diary,

For the second time in my life, I got a flat tire.

I was d0rift0ring onto 280 from the Wolfe onramp when all of a sudden, I hear this "flump".

"Hmm," I think. "That is an unusual sound. I hope it's not a flat".

*flump* .... "flump" .. "flump" . "flump" "flump" "flump"

"I wonder if I should get off. The Lawrence exit is right there. But, I would really hate to change a flat. So, I'll continue driving and hope it's not a flat."

Well, I'm a dumbass.

It was a flat and I totally should have gotten off at Lawrence. Instead, I pulled to the side of the highway and checked for the flat. Yea, flat on the rear right tire. It looked ok (non-shredded); it was just flat.

Even though it was late and I was kinda tired, I had the wits to remember all those news stories about people getting hit on the side of the freeway as they change their tires. I was pulled over near the Lawrence-280 onramp, so I figured that cars coming off the onramp would see me OK and if not, speeds on and onramp are pretty tame.

But, after I started reading the manual on how to change a tire, I noticed that the cars coming off the onramp were going pretty fast and they were zipping by pretty close to my car.

So the dilemma wound up to be:

Possibly damage my rim while driving on a flat in order to get to the next exit

OR

Possibly die while changing the flat

I chose to live.

I got back in my car and drive 25mph in the slow lane while my hazards are flashing. Good thing it was 3:30am and there weren't many cars on the road.

Anyhow, I drive about 1.5 mi to the next exit (Saratoga Ave.). I pull into a nearby gas station (which was closed) and find that my tire is completely shredded. In retrospect, if I had changed the tire while on the highway, I could have gotten that tire plugged and could resume using it. But that comes back to the dilemma of living vs saving a few hundred bucks.

Anyhow, changing the tire was pretty easy. It took probably 15min. But, the tire was underinflated. It read 20psi on my gauge.

I walked over to the air pump and read that it needed $0.75. I didn't have any change. But, I did notice that there was another gas station farther along the street and that was brightly lit.

I ran over and looked at the air pump.

"We provide free air and water service for all our customers."

I was low on gas, so this seemed like a win-win situation.

I axed the attendant (who was originally sleeping) if I could get some air after I bought some gas.

The guy nodded in approval. He seemed really displeased.

Anyways, I drove over to the station, filled up my tank, filled up my tire, and then drove off.

Today, it cost me $140 to get a new tire put on the rim, which was undamaged according to the folks at Stevenson Tire. I axed them if my alignment could have been broken by driving on the rim. They said probably not. I hope they're right.

Well, that's it.

P.S.

My current tires are Goodyear Eagle RSA, which have horrible reviews on tirerack.com.

On tirerack.com, Eagle RSA cost $98 each. At Stevenson Tire, they charged me $114 each. Not too bad. It came out to $140 with taxes and all the other nonsense items they put on the bill.

I asked them how much Eagle F1 GS-D3 cost. The guy said "$200 each." Oh shit!

I guess I'll be stuck with Eagle RSA until I win the lotto.
